is one of the all time popular European gold coins. It was minted from 1899 through 1914 and contains .1867 ounces of
gold.
The obverse of the French Rooster depicts the head of the Third French Republic along with the words “Republique Francaise.” The Third Republic was founded in 1870 following
the defeat of Napolean III in the Franco-Prussian War. The current government of France is its Fifth Republic.
The reverse extols the Coq Gaulois, a proud Gallic rooster, which signifies a revolutionary spirit along with a fierce fighting attitude. The reverse also depicts the French Revolutionary
motto, “Liberte Egalite Fraternite” (freedom, equality, fraternity), along with the mint strike date.
